Beds edged, weeded and topped — done properly, not piled
Mulch is the cheapest thing you can do to a yard and the easiest to do badly. Two to three inches, kept off the trunks and stems, holds moisture through August, keeps weed seed from germinating, and makes tired beds read as maintained. Piled a foot deep against a trunk — the volcano you see on half the properties in town — it rots the bark and kills the tree it was supposed to help. We weed and edge first, then lay the right depth and keep it off the stems.
